Choppy to smooth seas, with a great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were slightly choppy throughout the small boat portion, as three DNFs (Did Not Finish) occurred. Two of those DNFs were due to skippers crossing on region corners and crashing, with the remainder from a skipper pulling her boat after her connection started to have upwards of 40% packet loss. Conditions calmed a bit for the big boat portion, as two more DNFs were recorded. One of those two DNFs was due to a skipper’s WildWind losing it’s WWC race wind, with the remainder from a skipper crashing while crossing on a region corner. The crowds that gathered along the shores of the islands in the Genip and Ziziphus regions, as well as on the small racing dock and Posiedon Centre Spectator Pier in the Eden Jakana region, cheered on some exciting fleet racing on display from this weeks skippers.
This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Bowline course, was comprised of a majority of seven Bandit 22 LTEs. Five The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class, four sailing single-handed and one sailing crewed respectively, two Bandit IFs, and one TMS Laser One rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing a two lap affair on the North Sea Long Loop course, was comprised of a majority of five TMS I-Mocca 60s. Three WildWind Open 60s, two TMS Ushuaias, and one WildWind RC-44r rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Today’s winner was ViV (vivipezz Resident), with Moon (moonglownight Resident) second, and Cate and Anthony (Cate Sewell/AnthonyKingston Resident)* in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and to the SLCG for helping with racing duties.
Race Notes:
Cate (Cate Sewell) and Anthony (AnthonyKingston Resident) registered as a team prior to the start of the race, therefore their points are accredited together.
ViV (vivipezz Resident) and Moon (moonglownight Resident) finished tied with 6 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“
Skipper | Race 1 | Race 2 |
vivipezz Resident | 5 | 1 |
moonglownight Resident | 1 | 5 |
In the last race, ViV breaks the tie with Moon with her first place finish over Moon’s fifth place finish.
Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook) and Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre) both finished tied with 12 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“
Skipper | Best Finish | Next Best Finish |
Emileigh Starbrook | 2 | 10 |
Nicole Myhre | 3 | 9 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Emileigh’s favor with having a second place finish over Zimtzicke’s third place finish as her best.
Sea (filax Carter), Rugger (ruggeromare Resident), and Juicy (juice651 Resident) all finished tied with 18 points.
No excluded scores shall be used.“
Skipper | Best Finish | Next Best Finish |
filax Carter | 2 | 16 |
ruggeromare Resident | 6 | 12 |
juice651 Resident | 8 | 10 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Sea’s favor with having a second place finish over Rugger’s sixth place, and Juicy’s eighth place finishes as their best.
Diana (Dianafra Allen) and Max (Maximiliano Szondi) both finished tied with 19 points.
Dianafra Allen | 8 | 11 |
Maximiliano Szondi | 9 | 10 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Diana’s favor with having an eighth place finish over Max’s ninth place finish as his best.
Julie (JulieRoyale Resident), Amy Pond (Montserrat Naidoo), and Red (RedHeadJO Resident) all finished tied with 25 points. As they all finished with the exact same finishes in both portions, a DNF (Did Not Finish) during the small boat portion and a DNS (Did Not Start) during the big boat portion, neither Rule A8.1 or Rule A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing will satisfy breaking their tie. Therefore, Julie, Amy, and Red all remain tied in fifteenth place overall.
