Mild seas, with a great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The North Sea regions were generally calm as only two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. The first DNF occurred during the first race as a was stripped from their boat while crossing on region corners. The remaining DNF occurred during the second race as a skipper lost all control input for his boat after a bad region crossing. The crowds that gathered on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock, both in the Eden Jakana region, and along the shores of the island in the Ziziphus region, cheered on some exciting closely battled fleet racing from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Olympic Short Mirror course and a 2 lap affair on the North Sea Short Loop Mirror course, was made up of a majority of ten Bandit 22 LTEs. Four Bandit IFs, split evenly at two crewed and two single-handed respectively, rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.

Note:
Did Not Finish (DNF) = number of finish +1
Did Not Start (DNS) = number of start +1

Today’s winner was Jenna (jnx1e Resident), with Julie (JulieRoyale Resident) second, and Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and to the SLCG for helping with race duties.

Race Notes:
ViV (vivipezz Resident), Sirius (Sirius Rosca), and Sea (filax Carter) both finished tied with 16 points. Rule A8.1 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
vivipezz Resident 2 14
Sirius Rosca 6 10
filax Carter 8 8

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in ViV’s favor with having a second place finish over Sirius’s sixth place and Sea’s eighth place finishes as their best.

Vergelia (Vergelia Resident) and Diana (Dianafra Allen) finished tied with 25 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Appendix A, Scoring, 2021 – 2024 World Sailing Racing Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

Skipper Race 1 Race 2
Vergelia Resident 13 12
Dianafra Allen 12 13

In the last race, Vergelia breaks the tie with Diana with her twelfth place finish over Diana’s thirteenth place finish.

  1. Fun race on Monday even if these are not my favorite sailboats! Thanks y’all!
The nice thing about the B22 though is her swiftness: one can tack quickly!
Which allowed me to get to the start from the port side in clean air, without having to “put my elbows out” to cut through the massive fleet, and tacked in good position, slightly ahead of the fleet. I sailed a nice beat leg, and was happy to see only 1 boat ahead when I crossed back on the way to 1st mark.
Also, what I enjoyed about yesterday’s race was the 2-lap course: this lets you try things even on as simple a lap as the small loop. It turned out to be both a blessing and a curse to me though. Since I was not totally happy with my first lap I tried to sail a bit differently. First on the second leg to Sloe, I managed to gain quite a bit on Jenna by flying the spin more than in the first leg. I gained so much that I had to slow down at the mark, which coincidentally, was were I thought I could gain much compared to first lap. Indeed, I had rounded the mark very wide, keeping the spin up. So, arriving so fast on jenna’s aft, I dropped the spin and rounded the mark quite close. Unfortunately, I raised the Code0 after the mark instead of the spin (stupid fat fingers !) and wondered why the boat was not going her usual speed under spin! When I corrected my blunder, Jenna was already too far ahead and I had to settle for a good 2nd spot.
    Cheers & bon vent !
