Smooth seas, with a nice fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were calm for most as only one DNF (Did Not Finish) was recorded on the day, due to a skipper crashing to desktop in the middle of a region. The crowds that gathered on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier and small race dock, both in the Eden Jakana region, and along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus, Genip, and Eden Auk regions reveled in a great display of fleet racing on display from this weeks skippers.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Trapezoid course, was made up of a split majority of three Bandit 22 LTEs, and three The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Class. Two Dolphin Moths, one ReneMarine Clever, one TMS Nacra 17, one TMS Flying Shadow, one Shields Class, and one crewed Bandit IF rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Butterfly course, was made up of a majority of six TMS I-Mocca 60s. Four WildWind Open 60s, one WildWind AC-45, and one Trudeau 12 Metre rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Race Director: Cryptic

Did Not Finish (DNF) = number of finish +1
Did Not Start (DNS) = number of start +1

Today’s winner was Julie (JulieRoyale Resident), with Jenna (jnx1e Resident) second, and Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and to the SLCG for helping with racing duties.

Race Notes:
Palani (Palani Allen) and Max (Maximiliano Szondi) both finished the second race tied with a final time of 0:11:08. As the final time result is rounded to the nearest whole second in the Google Sheet, the exact final times for each skipper are: (race time multiplied by handicap equaling final time, all time in seconds)

Skipper Race Time Handicap Final Time
Palani 661 1.01 667.61
Maximiliano 1114 0.60 668.40

With the final times shown in seconds, the tie breaks in Palani’s favor with having a 667.61 seconds finish over Max’s 668.40 seconds finish. Just to note, if both skippers final times had been an exact tie, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing would be used to break that tie instead:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Jenna (jnx1e Resident), Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook), and Moon (moonglownight Resident) all finished tied with 8 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
jnx1e Resident 2 6
Emileigh Starbrook 3 5
moonglownight Resident 3 5

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Jenna’s favor with having a second place finish over Emileigh’s and Moon’s third place finishes as their best. As Emileigh and Moon both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this remaining tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

Skipper Race 1 Race 2
Emileigh Starbrook 5 3
moonglownight Resident 3 5

In the last race, Emileigh breaks the tie with Moon with her third place finish over Moon’s fifth place finish.

Sirius (Sirius Rosca) and Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre) both finished tied with 10 points.

Sirius Rosca 2 8
Nicole Myhre 4 6

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Sirius’s favor with having a second place finish over Zimtzicke’s fourth place finish as her best.

Rider (Rider Wilder), Diana (Dianafra Allen), and Palani (Palani Allen) all finished tied with 22 points.

Rider Wilder 9 13
Dianafra Allen 10 12
Palani Allen 10 12

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Rider’s favor with having a ninth place finish over Diana’s and Palani’s tenth place finishes as their best.

Dianafra Allen 12 10
Palani Allen 10 12

In the last race, Diana breaks the tie with Palani with her tenth place finish over Palani’s twelfth place finish.
