The first North Sea Bandit IF Regatta of 2021 was held on beautiful Saturday afternoon in the winter. This time we had a fleet of thirteen Bandit IFs at the start. Two of the twelve Bandit IFs had crew. The North Sea regions were well behaved and there was not a cloud in the sky.

We had a good start and right from the start we had a compact fleet of ten boats. This fleet did not hold for long, because at the first mark we had several groups of two boats each.

In the second race, the fleet spread over the entire North Sea immediately after the start, only at the first mark of this race it became clear who was in charge. The rest of the fleet followed closely behind.

The start of the third race caused some problems. Because the wind direction had changed 10 degrees from the first race, there was a risk of barging for three skippers early in the pre-start. One of the skippers saw this and corrected her speed and direction. The two other skippers continued until the start and were also penalized for this. After the start we had a nice battle for second place.

We had three DNFs (Did Not Finish) and one DSQ (Disqualified) through all races and it was another successful and sporting day in The North Sea.

More pictures after the results.

Today’s winner was Moon (moonglownight Resident), with Julie (JulieRoyale Resident) second, and Siri (Sirius Rosca) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.

Race Notes:
Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) was disqualified (DSQ) during the third race for failing to complete a 360° penalty turn as instructed by a race director due to a Rule 11 On The Same Tack, Overlapped foul at the start, colloquially known as barging.

11 ON THE SAME TACK, OVERLAPPED
When boats are on the same tack and overlapped, a windward boat shall keep clear of a leeward boat.

Rider (Rider Wilder) and Juicy (juice651 Resident) both finished tied with 18 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
Rider Wilder 7 11
juice651 Resident 9 9

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Rider’s favor with having a seventh place finish over Juicy’s ninth place finish as his best.

Katana (Bacchylides Edenflower) and Cate (Cate Sewell) both finished tied with 19 points.

Bacchylides Edenflower 7 12
Cate Sewell 9 10

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Katana’s favor with having a seventh place finish over Cate’s tenth place finish as her best.
