Another week of calms seas, with a great fleet turnout, featured during this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The North Sea regions were calm and behaved for most as three DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day. Of those three DNFs, two were from skippers pulling their boats from either getting stuck in irons or frustration, and the remainder was due to a skipper crashing on a region crossing. The crowd that gathered on the small race dock, in the Eden Jakana region, as well as along the shores of the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, cheered on some great fleet racing on display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea 01 and North Sea 02 courses, was comprised of a majority of nine Bandit 22 LTEs. Four Bandit IFs, three sailing single-handed and one sailing with crew respectively, and two Bandit 25Rs rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.

Today’s winner was ViV (vivipezz Resident), with Julie (JulieRoyale Resident) second, and Moon (moonglownight Resident) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate and to the SLCG for helping with race duties.
Race Notes:
Micha (Micha Karfield) was disqualified (DSQ) during the second race for sailing an incorrect course, sailing east of the island of Ziziphus instead of sailing west and rounding the southern portion as indicated by the course.
Sirius (Sirius Rosca) and Kim (Kim Farleigh) both finished the second race tied with a final time of 0:10:25. As the final time result is rounded to the nearest whole second in the Google Sheet, the exact final times for each skipper are: (race time multiplied by handicap equaling final time, all time in seconds)
Skipper | Race Time | Handicap | Final Time |
Sirius | 1096 | 0.57 | 624.72 |
Kim | 1097 | 0.57 | 625.29 |
With the final times shown in seconds, the tie breaks in Sirius’s favor with having a 624.72 seconds finish over Kim’s 625.29 seconds finish. Just to note, if both skippers final times had been an exact tie, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing would be used to break that tie instead:
“If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.“
ViV (vivipezz Resident) and Julie (JulieRoyale Resident) finished tied with 3 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“
Skipper | Race 1 | Race 2 |
vivipezz Resident | 2 | 1 |
JulieRoyale Resident | 1 | 2 |
In the last race, ViV breaks the tie with Julie with her first place finish over Julie’s second place finish.
Moon (moonglownight Resident) and Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook) both finished tied with 8 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“
Skipper | Best Finish | Next Best Finish |
moonglownight Resident | 3 | 5 |
Emileigh Starbrook | 4 | 4 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Moon’s favor with having a third place finish over Emileigh’s fourth place finish as her best.
Micha (Micha Karfield) and Meireles (Meireles Diabolito) both finished tied with 19 points.
Micha Karfield | 6 | 13 |
Meireles Diabolito | 8 | 11 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Micha’s favor with having a sixth place finish over Meireles’s eighth place finish as his best.
Thanks for the rapid post, Cryptic. This was a good day of sailing for me in 2 fun races 🙂
Please, dont take it bad but some comments seems to come from Ubu’s world: Sirius and Kim were sailing the same boat, Sirius finished before Kim, so there was no doubt as to who was ahead, don’t you think?
Then, there is a typo in this sentence: “In the last race, ViV breaks the tie with Julie with her second place finish over Julie’s fourth place finish.” We should read “with her first place finish over Julie’s second place”.
Keep up the great work, Cheers!

“Sirius and Kim were sailing the same boat, Sirius finished before Kim, so there was no doubt as to who was ahead, don’t you think?” Even though Sirius finished with an overall time that was one second quicker than Kim’s, after handicap was included, and the sheet does it’s magic with rounding, their final time was the same. You might notice that their initial overall time was indeed different, but others may not. As a result, all ties will have an explanation.
