A great fleet turnout, with clam seas that turned slightly choppy late, highlighted this weeks North Sea Bandit Regatta. The North Sea regions started off smooth and behaved for the 17 skippers that turnout out this week, with every skipper finishing the first race without a crash. The seas turned a bit choppy late, as four DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded during the second race. Of those four DNFs, two were due to skippers crossing on region corners, and the remaining two due to skippers crashing on crossings. The crowd that gathered on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, and along the shores of the island in the Ziziphus region, cheered on the great fleet racing in display from this weeks skippers. This weeks fleet, sailing on the North Sea Manta and North Sea Bowline courses, was comprised of a majority of eight Bandit 22 LTEs. Six Bandit IFs, four sailing single-handed and two sailing with crew respectively, and four Bandit 25Rs rounded out this weeks Bandit fleet.

The fleet rounds the green buoy, southwest of the island in the Ziziphus region, during the first race of the North Sea Bandit Regatta, on Monday, September 21st, 2020.

Race Notes:
Jenna (jnx1e Resident) and Jackson (Jacquimo Resident) both finished the first race tied with a final time of 0:11:27. As the final time result is rounded to the nearest whole second in the Google Sheet, the exact final times for each skipper are: (race time multiplied by handicap equaling final time, all time in seconds)
Skipper | Race Time | Handicap | Final Time |
jnx1e | 916 | 0.75 | 687.00 |
Jacquimo | 1206 | 0.57 | 687.42 |
With the final times shown in seconds, the tie breaks in Jenna’s favor with having a 687.00 seconds finish over Jackson’s 687.42 seconds finish. Just to note, if both skippers final times had been an exact tie, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing would be used to break that tie instead:
“If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.“
Moon (moonglownight Resident) and Daenerys (blondij Resident) both finished tied with 4 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“
Skipper | Best Finish | Next Best Finish |
moonglownight Resident | 1 | 3 |
blondij Resident | 2 | 2 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Moon’s favor with having a first place finish over Daenerys’s second place finish as her best.
