Calm to mild seas, a great fleet turnout, and some exciting racing highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were behaved for most as just three DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded on the day, all during the big boat portion. Two of those DNFs were due to region crashes, with the third due to a skipper crossing on region corners. The crowd that was gathered on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, located in the Eden Jakana region, reveled in the thrilling finish witnessed during the small boat portion. Jenna and Isa, both sailing The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, put on a show as they crossed the finish line at the exact same time for a perfect photo finish.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Copacabana course, was comprised of a split majority of four TMS Flying Shadows and four Bandit IFs. Two Bandit 22 LTEs, two Bandit 25Rs, two TMS Nacra 17s, and one Quest M-24 rounded out the small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Extreme Reverse course, was comprised of a majority of nine Wildwind Open 60s. Four TMS One Design 65s, one TMS Volvo Open 70, and one Wildwind AC-62 rounded out the big boat fleet.

Jenna and Isa, both in TMS Flying Shadows, cross the race line for a photo finish, during the small boat portion of the North Sea Open Regatta, on Wednesday, August 26th, 2020.

Jenna (jnx1e Resident) and Isa (isab DeCuir) both finished the small boat portion tied at the finishing line with a time of 14:22. As their final time also remains tied, as they both sailed the same boat, Rule A7 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to score this tie:

If boats are tied at the finishing line or if a handicap or rating system is used and boats have equal corrected times, the points for the place for which the boats have tied and for the place(s) immediately below shall be added together and divided equally. Boats tied for a race prize shall share it or be given equal prizes.

Therefore, both Jenna and Isa receive 5.5 points, as the product for the place for which they have tied and for the place immediately below, 5 and 6, added together and divided equally.

Zimtzicke (Nicole Myhre) and Moon (moonglownight Resident) both finished tied with 11 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
Nicole Myhre 2 9
moonglownight Resident 4 7

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Zimtzicke’s favor with having a second place finish over Moon’s fourth place finish as his best.

Kim (Kim Farleigh) and Nihiwatu (Nihiwatu Resident) both finished tied with 26 points.

Kim Farleigh 10 16
Nihiwatu Resident 11 15

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Kim’s favor with having a tenth place finish over Nihiwatu’s eleventh place finish as her best.
