Smooth seas and a great fleet turnout highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The regions of the North Sea behaved splendidly as no DNFs (Did Not Finish) or crashes occurred on the day. The crowds on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier, in the Eden Jakana region, as well as on the islands in the Ziziphus and Genip regions, took in some great racing as a result of the smooth seas.
This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), was comprised of a small majority of four The Mesh Shop (TMS) Nacra 17s. Three TMS Star Class, two Bandit 25Rs, one Bandit IF, one TMS Flying Shadow, one TMS Sea Boss – Rider, and one Quest Melges-24 made up the remainder of this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea CCW (counter-clockwise) course, was comprised of a split majority of three Wildwind Open 60s and three TMS One Design 65s. One TMS Volvo Open 70, one Wildwind AC-62, and one ACA33 rounded out this weeks big boat fleet.

Race Notes:
Daenerys (blondij Resident) and Rugger (ruggeromare Resident) both finished tied with 11 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“
Skipper | Best Finish | Next Best Finish |
blondij Resident | 1 | 10 |

Thanks for the races and report, Cryptic!
This was not only a fun racing event, as usual, but also a very instructive day as well.
I cannot stress enough the difficulties of taking a clean start in racing conditions with 15+ boats on the line: with my little windsurfer, I took as good a start as possible (2s on the line) but ended in dire straits.
Indeed, first a Star was slowing me down at start, then a pair of Bandits sailed by, luffing me up and forcing me to tack… and tacks are costly on the SeaRider. The result is a disappointing time in the end, despite good sailing conditions in the North Sea. But it was great fun to fight and try to get the best of a difficult starting situation. Great learning experience as well. Thanks y’all! Until next time 🙂
