Mild sim sailing weather that turned a bit choppy late, with another great fleet turnout, highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The North Sea regions were mostly clam for the small boats portion, as only two DNFs (Did Not Finish) were recorded, one skipper pulled her boat after losing her navigation HUD while another skipper got stripped from her boat on a crossing. The mild seas held almost all the way through the big boats portion as well, with another two DNFs recorded due to crashes, however the region crossing between the Sapote region and the Eden Jakana region decided to collect tolls towards the finish of the race, as several boats lagged across the crossing or lost their skippers momentarily on a rough crossing. The crowd on hand, gathered in the usual spots in the Eden Jakana, Genip, and Ziziphus regions, cheered on all of this weeks skippers as both fleets put on a great display of racing.

This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Olympic Mirror course, was comprised of a majority of six The Mesh Shop (TMS) Star Classes, split evenly with three sailing single-handed and three sailing with crew respectively. Four TMS Nacra 17s, three Bandit IFs, two Bandit 25Rs, one TMS Flying Shadow, and one Shields Class rounded out this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, this weeks big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Outer Inner Loop (OIL) course, was comprised of a majority of four Wildwind Open 60s. Two Bandit 50/3s, one TMS Volvo Open 70, one TMS One Design 65, one TMS Ushuaia, one ACA33, one Trudeau 12 Metre, one Wildwind RC-44r, and one Wildwind AC-62 made up the remainder of this weeks big boat fleet.

Race Notes:
Red (RedHeadJO Resident), Julie (JulieRoyale Resident), and Emileigh (Emileigh Starbrook) all finished tied with 16 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.

Skipper Best Finish Next Best Finish
RedHeadJO Resident 2 14
JulieRoyale Resident 5 11
Emileigh Starbrook 6 10

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Red’s favor with having a second place finish over Julie’s fifth place finish and Emileigh’s sixth place finish as their best. Subsequently, Julie further breaks with having a fifth place best finish over Emileigh’s sixth place best finish.

Max (Maximiliano Szondi) and Sirius (Sirius Rosca) finished tied with 20 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.

Skipper Race 1 Race 2
Maximiliano Szondi 12 8
Sirius Rosca 8 12

In the last race, Max breaks the tie with Sirius with his eighth place finish over Sirius’s twelfth place finish.
