Mild sim sailing weather with another nice spectator turnout highlighted this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. The regions of the North Sea and Fruit Islands were generally well behaved with only three DNFs (Did Not Finish) recorded on the day. Only one of those three DNFs was due to a crash, the other two DNFs were due to a navigation HUD failure and a skippers connection resulting in both skippers pulling their boats from the race. Crowds gathered in the usual places, on the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in the Eden Lapwing region, and on the shores of the island in the Ziziphus region, to cheer on the great display put on buy today’s fleets.
This weeks small boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Manta Reverse course, was comprised of a slim majority of four The Mesh Shop (TMS) Flying Shadows, two crewed and two single-handed respectively. Three Bandit 25Rs, one TMS Nacra 17, and one Shields Class made up the remainder of this weeks small boat fleet. Meanwhile, the big boat fleet, sailing on the North Sea Roundabout course, was comprised of a small majority of three Wildwind Open 60s. One Wild Wind AC-62, one Bandit 50/3, one TMS Volvo Open 70, and one Trudeau 12 Metre made up the remainder of the big boat fleet.

Julie (JulieRoyale Resident) and Sandra (WWWAAAA Resident) finished tied with 8 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“
Skipper | Race 1 | Race 2 |
JulieRoyale Resident | 5 | 3 |
WWWAAAA Resident | 3 | 5 |
In the last race, Julie breaks the tie with Sandra with her third place finish over Sandra’s fifth place finish.
Kristaly (kristaly Resident) and Tantrica (YT Recreant) both finished tied with 15 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“
Skipper | Best Finish | Next Best Finish |
kristaly Resident | 5 | 10 |
YT Recreant | 7 | 8 |
With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Kristaly’s favor with having a fifth place finish over Tantrica’s seventh place finish as her best.
