Some great sailmanship and sim weather showcased in this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. Some exciting close sailing skills were on display as both courses had portions of the fleet tightly stacked in spots. The sims themselves behaved well as we only had one DNF in each race due to crashes. Once again, spectators continue to turn out in large numbers along the beaches of Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region, the beach in the Eden Albatros region, the Poseidon Centre Spectator Pier in the Eden Puffin region, and the committee boat dock in the Breadnut region.
The small boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Circle course, was made up of a majority of three Bandit IFs. Two Dolphin Moths, two TMS Laser Ones, two Quest Melges-24s, two Shields Class, and one TMS Flying Shadow made up the remainder of the small boat fleet. Racing got off to a great start as more than half the fleet was across the start line in about 30 seconds. Peter, in his Laser One, nailed his start with a perfect 00:00:00 across the start line. Kristaly and Lucy, both in Melges-24s, were next as they both crossed the start line at 00:00:02. Moon, in his Shields Class, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:04. I was across the start line next, in my Dolphin Moth, at 00:00:07. Carlota, in her Bandit IF, was across the start line next at 00:00:11, followed by Jackson, in his Bandit IF, at 00:00:15. ViV, in her Dolphin Moth, was across the line next at 00:00:21 followed by Katana, in her Laser One, at 00:00:23. Rayz, in his Flying Shadow, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:28 with Neil, in his Bandit IF, following at 00:00:33. Traeumer, in his Shields Class, was across the start line next at 00:00:50. I quickly got out ahead of the fleet, in my Dolphin Moth, as Viv, also in her Dolphin Moth, was right on my stern. Kristaly and Lucy, both in their Melges-24s, were next behind us. Rayz, in his Flying Shadow, settled in behind the Melges-24s with Peter and Katana, both in their Laser Ones, following along behind him. Next up was the mixed Bandit IF and Shields Class pack of Traeumer (Shields), Carlota (IF), Jackson (IF), Moon (Shields), and Neil (IF). Unfortunately, Lucy crashed, recording a DNF for this race. I held my lead and crossed the finish line first, taking line honors with Viv, right on my stern, crossing the finish line second. Kristaly was next to cross the finish line followed by Rayz, Peter, Katana, Traeumer, Carlota, Moon, and Neil.
The big boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Inner Outer Loop (NS-OIL Rev1) course, was made up of a split majority of two Wildwind RC-44Rs and two Trudeau 12 Metres. A TMS Ushuaia and a TMS One Design 65 made up the remainder of the big boat fleet. Racing got off quickly again as the entire fleet was across the start line as 22 seconds ticked off the race clock. We are really seeing the fruits of everyone practicing their pre-start routines. Peter, in his 12 Metre, and myself, in my Ushuaia, both crossed the start line at 00:00:04. Lucy, in her RC-44R, was next to cross the line at 00:00:09. Traeumer, in his RC-44R, was across the start line next at 00:00:15. Elbag, in his One Design 65, was next to cross the start line at 00:00:18. Isilme, in his 12 Metre, was across the start line next at 00:00:22. Lucy and Traeumer, both in their faster Wildwind RC-44Rs, quickly jumped out in front of the fleet, on the first and second leg of the course, heading south towards the Sloe region. Elbag, in his speedy One Design 65, settled in behind the RC-44s. Peter and Isilme, both in their Trudeau 12 Metres, followed next in the fleet as I settled in behind them, in my slower TMS Ushuaia. Unfortunately, Lucy wound up crashing along the surf leg of the course, so called because of the course going by the active surf waves in the Eden Godwit region, and recorded a DNF as a result. Elbag would also record a DNF as he had to leave with the physical world stealing him away in the middle of the race. Traeumer would hold the lead from that point and cross the finish line first, recording line honors. Peter crossed the finish line second with Isilme following across the finish line in third. I finally crossed the finish line fourth.

Traeumer (traeumer66 Resident) and Katana (Bacchylides Edenflower) finished tied with 11 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“
