The first Trudeau Patchogue Class Races in the North Sea for 2017 turned out wonderfully. The sims behaved well for all of our fleet with no crashes or DNFs. We also had a splendid turnout of spectators in the Eden Puffin, Eden Albatros, Ziziphus, and Breadnut regions.
The first race, run on the NS-WC Rch course, saw a great start from the entire fleet as everyone got under way before 20 seconds had ticked off the race clock. Peter was across the line first, at 00:00:01, followed immediately by Kurt, at 00:00:02. I was next to cross the start line, at 00:00:05, followed by Asami, at 00:00:12, and finally Joshua, at 00:00:17. I took the optimum line on the first leg and took the lead at the first marker, the green buoy south of Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region. Peter was right on my stern followed by Joshua, Kurt, and Asamai. As we neared the orange buoy in the Eden Puffin region, the second mark for the course, Joshua and Kurt had passed Peter. I was held the lead for the rest of the course, crossing the finish line first, with line honors. Joshua crossed the finish line in second, seconds behind me. Kurt crossed the finish line third, followed by Peter and then Asami.
The second race, run on the North Sea Manta course, saw a bit of a rough start for the fleet. Peter and Joshue both crossed the start line, mere seconds early, and had to circle around to start again. Kurt got things started, crossing the line at 00:00:02, with Asami following along at 00:00:06. I was next to cross the line at 00:00:10. Joshua and Peter, both having circled to re-start crossed the start line at 00:00:22 and 00:00:28 respectively. Kurt and I were neck and neck around the first mark, the blue buoy in the Sapote region, as Asami, Peter, and Joshua followed close behind. Kurt and I stayed nearly side by side as we pulled the center boards on the Patchogue and surfed towards the second mark, the pink buoy in the Eden Fulmar region. On the beat towards the third mark, the green buoy south of Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region, Kurt and I were still neck and neck until we rounded the mark and I got the edge and better puff of wind, as I surfed into the lead. That lead would not last as Josh had passed Asami by this point to catch up with Kurt, who both were just on my stern as we surfed, centerboards up, to the third mark. Josh and Kurt both got better turns around the mark, turning inside of me as I slid back to third. As all three of us surfed up along the reach to the fourth mark, the blue buoy again in the Sapote region, we were all nearly neck and neck. This order would hold as we rounded the fourth and fifth marks. After rounding the fifth mark, the green buoy again south of Lighthouse Isle in the Ziziphus region, I took a slightly better line to the finish as I passed Kurt. Joshua crossed the finish line first, taking line honors. I crossed the finish line second, right on Joshua’s stern with Kurt crossing third, just after me. Asami crossed the finish line fourth and Peter fifth.
