The small boat fleet gets under way during the North Sea Open Regatta, on Wednesday, November 2nd, 2016.
This weeks North Sea Open Regatta saw fair sim weather, a great turnout, and even some new racers. The sims behaved well as only one DNF was recorded in each portion of the regatta. The turn out was again large as the small boat fleet was 15 boats strong. We also welcome Ali to racing in SL and in the North Sea as a new racer, along with Trey, who started racing with us last week.
The small boat fleet, racing on the NS-SOL-13A course, was made up of a majority of seven Bandit IFs. Three Shields Class, two Wildwind RC-44s (which were allowed to race as an exception), a Nacra 17, a Melges-24, and a Kataba MX 20 Teleri made up the remainder of the small boat fleet.
The big boat fleet, racing on the NS-1b course, was made up of a majority of four Wildwind RC-44s. Three TMS Ushuaias, two ACA33s, and a Rene Marine RM30 made up the remainder of the big boat fleet.

Today’s winner was Stu (stuart1524 Resident), with Ian (ollyian1 Resident) second, and Carlota (Carlota Dufaux) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.
Prize plaques will be awarded for the first, second, and third place finishers based on the final points tally.
Race Note:
Trey (Trayla Parx) and Ali (Alica Weezles), being new racers, were allowed an exception to race their RC-44s, a big boat, in the small boat portion of the regatta. As they both raced with identical race ids, the start line only recorded the first instance of that ID to cross both times*. As such, we were not able to capture Trey’s starting time for the small boat race. However, he did finish with a DNF in the small boat race and receives those points. We were able to capture Trey’s and Ali’s full times for the big boat race.
*You must race with a unique race ID (e.g. not used by anyone else) to have the start line capture your times.
Carlota (Carlota Dufaux) and Lucy (LucyInTheSky Afarensis) both finished tied with 8 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Carlota’s favor with having a second place finish over Lucy’s third place finish as her best.
Susi (Susicat Oh) and Jackson (Jacquimo Resident) finished tied with 16 points. As they both have duplicate finishes, Rule A8.2 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:
“If a tie still remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in the last race. Any remaining ties shall be broken by using the tied boats’ scores in the next-to-last race and so on until all ties are broken. These scores shall be used even if some of them are excluded scores.“

In the last race, Susi breaks the tie with Jackson with her fourth place finish over Jackson’s twelfth place finish.
