North Sea Open Regatta – October 12th 2016

Some stormy seas and another great spectator turnout featured in this weeks North Sea Open Regatta. Sim weather was a bit choppy at first in the small boats race, claiming three racers to crashes but it smoothed out in time for the big boats race. We also saw a great turnout of spectators once again, not only at the committee boat dock in Breadnut, but also the Poseidon Center Spectator Pier in Eden Puffin, and along the shore in Eden Albatros. The SLCG was also out today steering traffic clear of the fleet as it raced, which we thank them for. We would also like to welcome Dess back to the North Sea and racing, as she has returned from her physical world travels.

This weeks small boat fleet, racing on North Sea Olympic Course (Long), was made up of a majority of four Bandit IFs. Two Melges-24s, a Shields Class, a Laser One, and a Nacra 17 made up the remainder of the fleet. Racing started off with Peter, in his Laser One, crossing the start line first, at 00:00:03. Cole, in her Nacra 17, was next to cross at 00:00:10 with Jackson, in his Bandit IF, following at 00:00:14. Beane, in her Melges-24, was next across at 00:00:17. Traeumer, in his Shields class, was next at 00:00:22, with Stu, in his Bandit IF, following at 00:00:24. Neil, in his bandit IF, followed at 00:00:39, with Lucy, in her Melges-24, across next at 00:01:00, and Susi, in her Bandit IF, across at 00:03:04. Beane, in her Melges-24, and Cole, in her Nacra 18, quickly made moves to pass Peter’s slower Laser One, and paced the fleet. Peter held in third as the Bandit IF pack of Neil, Jackson, and Susi, settled in at the rear of the fleet. Tragedy struck during the end of the first leg of the course, as crashes claimed Traeumer, Stu, and Lucy, all recording DNF’s. Beane held her lead, as she crossed the finish first, taking line honors. Cole was not far behind, as she crossed the finish second, with Peter, crossing third. Neil followed along, crossing forth, with Jackson, and Susi, crossing next.

This weeks big boat fleet, racing on the North Sea Sail 4 Life 2015 B (NS S4L 2015 B) course, was comprised of a split majority of two Wildwind RC-44s and two Ushuaias. A Trudeau 12 Metre, a Trudeau Francois Jacques, a One Design 65, a Bandit 60, and an ACA33 made up the remainder of the fleet. We once again had a really great clean start from the big boat fleet this week as seven of the nine boats were across the line in less than 30 seconds. Peter added to his great start from the small boat race, as he got off to a almost perfect one at 00:00:01, in his Trudeau 12 Metre. Next across was Dess, in her RC-44, at 00:00:03, followed by Cole, in her ACA33, at 00:00:05. Beane was next to cross, in her RC-44, at 00:00:09, with Stu, in his Ushuaia, following at 00:00:11. Kristaly, in her Francois Jacques, was next across, at 00:00:25, with Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin as crew, following at 00:00:28. John, in his One Design 65, followed next, at 00:00:50, with Susi, in her Ushuaia, crossing at 00:01:08. Peters quick lead wouldn’t hold however, as his Trudeau 12 Metre was not as speedy as Dess’s RC-44, as Dess made an immediate move to lead the pack. Beane, in her RC-44, Cole, in her ACA33, and John, in his One Design 65, also made moves passing Peter, putting him square in the middle of the fleet. Stu, in his Ushuaia, Kristaly, in her Francois Jacques, Cranston, in his Bandit 60 with Shaylin, and Susi, in her Ushuaia, all settled in behind Peter. Beane wound up making another move to pass Dess, taking the lead, with Dess not giving up and staying right on her stern. Beane wound up crossing the line first, taking line honors with Dess crossing the line 10 seconds later. Cole was next to cross, with John crossing not far behind. Peter crossed next, with Stu, Kristaly, Cranston with Shaylin, and Susi all following.

Today’s winner was Peter (PeterSailor Resident), with Beane (beane Bade) second, and Cole (Colette Verino) in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.

Prize plaques will be awarded for the first, second, and third place finishers based on the final points tally.

Race Note:
Jackson (Jacquimo Resident) and Dess (desspaa Resident) both finished tied with 14 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Jackson’s favor with having a fourth place finish over Dess’s sixth place finish as her best.

Susi (Susicat Oh) and Cranston (Cranston Yordstorm) both finished tied with 15 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“

Traeumer (traeumer66 Resident) and Lucy (LucyInTheSky Afarensis) both finished tied with 17 points. However, as they both finished with the exact same positions in each race, both having a DNF in the small boats and a DNS in the big boats, neither A8.1 or A8.2 will break their tie. Therefore, Traeumer and Lucy remain tied in 12th place.
