North Sea Open Regatta – July 13th 2016

This weeks North Sea Open Regatta had a nice turn out with some stormy sim weather that turned a bit calmer toward the end. We had several crashes during the first race however the sims settled down for the second race with only one DNF that was not crash related.

This week also saw us updating the handicap for The Mesh Shop Ushuaia to 0.60 (old 0.69). This was due to the recently released update that fixed a bug that allowed a speed boost upwind.

We would also like to welcome Wolfbite, who was racing in his first North Sea regatta. He joins us after getting his feet wet in Rainbow Sails YC’s 12 Metre races in The North Sea on Sunday mornings at 4 AM SL time.

This weeks small boat fleet, racing on North Sea Circle, was made up of a majority of Nacra 17’s, which is steadily seeing some renewed popularity over the last two months. The remainder of the small boat fleet was made up of two Bandit IF’s, two Flying Shadow’s, and a Dolphin Moth. The race got off to a great clean start, however turbulence was around the corner as Arya, on her Nacra 17, and Joshua, on his Flying Shadow, both crashed and recorded DNF’s. The remainder of the fleet pressed on with my Dolphin Moth zipping out front and taking line honors. Cole was not far behind, on her Nacra 17, and claimed second cross the line. Stu, on his Nacra 17 with Becca crewing, Red, in her Bandit IF, and Jackson, on his Bandit IF, followed across the line in short order.

The big boat fleet, racing on North Sea Olympic Course Long, saw smoother seas and was made up of a majority of The Mesh Shop Ushuaia’s, with three. The rest of the fleet was comprised of two One Design 65’s, an ACA33, and a Trudeau 12 Metre. The start was a bit rough with Bean, in her One Design 65, barging Joshua, sailing his Ushuaia, which pushed him into my Ushuaia. Beane did a penalty turn however and proceeded on. Unfortunately, Joshua wound up recording a DNF not soon after. Arya, after recording a DNF in the small boat race, recovered for a great race with her One Design 65 and sped off to take line honors with Beane close behind. Cole, in her ACA33, was third across the line, with my Ushuaia fourth and newcomer Wolfbite, in his Trudeau 12 Metre, close behind me crossing fifth. Stu, in his Ushuaia with Becca as crew, brought up the rear to finish sixth across the line

Today’s winner was Cole, with Cryptic second, and Arya in third place. Congratulations to all of you. Thank you to everyone who came to sail and spectate.

Prize plaques will be awarded for the first, second, and third place finishers based on the final points tally.

Race Note:
Viv was unfortunately disqualified from the small boat race for racing the incorrect course.

Red and Beane both finished tied with 11 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“

With the race results rearranged in best to worst finish order, per A8.1, the tie breaks in Red’s favor with having a third place finish over Beane’s fourth place finish as her best.

Jackson and Joshua both finished tied with 13 points. Rule A8.1 of Guidance on Scoring under Appendix A to the Rules of Sailing is used to break this tie:

“If there is a series score tie between two or more boats, each boat’s race scores shall be listed in order of best to worst, and at the first point(s) where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favour of the boat(s) with the best score(s). No excluded scores shall be used.“
